Fundraising

Throughout Declan’s life, his family raised money for The Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, the charity which supports the young patients and their families during the periods of admission or surgery on the Children’s Heart Surgery Unit and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Leeds General Infirmary. Team Broken Hearts was created to raise money for the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and also we decided to include The British Heart Foundation and Live Life, then Give Life, a charity that promotes organ donation and supports the work of the NHS UK Transplant Service

On the 28th September 2013, Kevin Hodgson, Matt Walker, Mark Walker, Pete Laws, Richard Fairhurst, Dan Laws,  Mick Donoghue, Gareth Bates and Alan Roddis all rode the British Heart Foundation Peaks Mountain Bike Ride.

It took on 44 miles of torturous climbing and fast bone crunching descents. There were falls, minor injuries and lots of swearing but they all completed the ride together in 8 hours 25 minutes. The event was harder than they all imagined and there were many tears shed as they returned to Hope to see their awaiting supporters.

On 6th October 2013 our dear friend, Catherine Sanders, who has shown a true dedication to supporting the family though this traumatic time, ran and completed the Mablethorpe half marathon. Cath crossed the finish line in an amazing 2 hours 4 minutes, tired, emotional and ready to put her feet up for a while!. Given that Cath only took up running earlier this year, this was a truly kind and selfless act.
